Obituary of IΑ Ljubivoje Perunovic (1937-2026)
On January 10, 2026, in Nis, Ljubivoje Perunovic passed away in his 89th year – a graduate lawyer, International Chess Arbiter, and a legend of Nis, Serbian, and Yugoslav chess. A brilliant speaker and a true gentleman, he left a deep mark on every field of chess to which he devoted his life.
As an international arbiter, he officiated at the most important tournaments in the country and Europe, including several Chess Olympiads. For years he also worked on the education of chess arbiters. As a player, he was the senior champion of Nis and a strong team competitor, but he dedicated himself primarily to organizing tournaments, leading clubs, and officiating. His last appearance as a player was at the World Amateur Championship in Vrnjacka Banja in November 2025.
He held many positions in city, regional, and national chess organizations and was a long-time official of Chess Club “Zeleznicar” and president of Chess Club “Nis.” His contribution to the organization of major tournaments and championships remains part of international chess history.
By profession as a lawyer, he also served for many years as director of city offices in Nis and received numerous city and state awards, including the City of Nis – Lifetime Achievement Award.
He was especially proud of his sons: Predrag, an economist and former UN official, and Miodrag, an International Master, successful Serbian team head captain, and renowned coach. His greatest joy were his grandchildren, particularly his talented grandson Uros, whom he accompanied to tournaments.
He will be remembered as a legend of Nis and Serbian chess, a true gentleman of the chess world, whose achievements will endure and whose legacy will live on through his sons and grandchildren.
May he rest in peace.
