17th IA Seminar – Report

The 17th Internet Based International Arbiter Certification Seminars were held in Yancheng from 28th June to 1st July 2025. It was organized by Chinese Chess Association and Arbiters’ Commission, under the auspices of FIDE.

The Lecturers were IA Laurent Freyd (FRA) and IA Alex McFarlane (SCO), both FIDE Lecturers.

The Language of the Seminar was English.

The model of the seminar was the following:

– 4 times 4 hours in classroom every day
– Usage of a case study on running an event, from A to Z, as the leading thread for the lectures’ content
– Daily homework from one session to the next (counted as part of the contribution and technical evaluation of the participants
– Exam split into 4 parts (1 chessclock challenge, 2 questions on title norms, 3 questions on closing the event, 5 questions on the behavior of the chief arbiters)

Lecturers and participants used Chamilo, ARB learning education platform.

Fifteen (15) arbiters from China participated in the Seminar, and all of them participated in the evaluation test that was held after the end of the lectures.

The following succeeded in the test and they will be awarded a norm for the title of the International Arbiter, after the approval of the next FIDE Council:
