International Arbiter Certification Seminar – Beginning

Dear chess arbiters and especially FIDE arbiters,

The FIDE Arbiters Commission already announced that our goal is to have well prepared and educated arbiters. We understand that only arbiters who prepare for chess events and are well aware of effective FIDE regulations can act at the highest level. We want to support arbiters and so our decision was to start the International Arbiter certification Seminar (IA Seminars) in 2024, not to postpone them to another year.

According to the FIDE Regulations for the training of chess arbiters, starting from January 1st 2024, each application for IA arbiter requires one norm from IA Seminar. The duration of the IA Seminar shall be a minimum of sixteen (16) hours on at least two (2) days.

Please do not consider this as an obstacle, take it as an important step to reach our goal – to see better prepared arbiters, who take responsibility for their education.

IA Seminars are not the only educational project of the FIDE Arbiters commission. We also work on another project – Refresher courses, this self -paced online project will be compulsory for all International arbiters and FIDE Arbiters.

But let’s return to IA Seminars, there are clear differences between FIDE Seminars and IA Seminars:

  1. Content of IA Seminars differs from FA Seminars, focusing on practical abilities defined in Regulations)
  2. IA Seminars are for FIDE Arbiters (FA Seminars are for national arbiters)
  3. IA Seminars are delivered by two Lecturers (FA Seminars by one Lecturer)
  4. IA Seminars are assessed by a readiness evaluation at the end of topics (FA Seminars are concluded by written examination)
  5. IA Seminar is for a maximum 25 participants (FA Seminars limit is 20 participants)
  6. IA Seminar is in English (FA Seminars are in any FIDE language)
